My favourite dog businesses to shop from

I love to buy things for my dog. Some may say it’s an addiction. I call it a healthy habit. Because I like to buy things for my dog AND support small, I have curated a list of my favourite dog businesses to shop from.

The picture/logo for each business links out to their website.

Pet Kiwi

I love Pet Kiwi! Maybe it’s the mascot Hulk whom may get you a cheeky discount with a code for shopping online if you aren’t Auckland based, but if you are able to visit he loves pats and gives the best treato eyes if you ask if you can give him  treat!

Pet Kiwi has a fantastic selection of “pick and mix” chews and at the counter a good little bargain bin of chews as well. They also have all the treat brands you could ever think of! Pet.Kiwi stocks one of my favourite Australian brands – Pablo and Co. However, they actually stock A LOLT of brands. Pet Kiwi is small in terms of floor space for a pet shop, but they have EVERYTHING. I got a soft Elizabethan Collar for Petal from Pet Kiwi when she got spayed. They also have snuffle mats, lick mats, dog water bottle, treat pouches, muzzles. Everything you could want and need, in one place. Have a bird? They have a bird section. It is worth checking out but be warned: it is very easy to spend lots there!

Bonus: they were NZ’s first pet store to achieve living wage accreditation, they have adoption days with various charities instead of housing live pets and many profits go to vaccination services at shelters. Get yourself some cool gear, great treats and know you are actually supporting a really cool business that is just helping pets everywhere!

Sweet As Pup

For online shopping I like to support Sweet As Pup. I use Fur Love for my dog to keep her fur furresh – can I get this at many other shops? Yes. I like to support Sweet As Pup for my Fur Love needs and when I do – I always add something else to my cart!

Sweet As Pup does special orders. Brands they bring in stock from (Big and Little Dogs, Fringe Studio, Zippy Paws, Sassy Woof and more) you can special order what you want something in particular and they bring it in for you and you pay for the item and then the postage price to send it to you in New Zealand instead of postage from where ever that shop is based (usually the US). I have made a Sassy Woof and Big and Little Dogs special order and it’s so good! Now I have cool dog products that very few people have in New Zealand! Sweet As Pup also stock my favourite brand ever: Pablo and Co!

Lastly: Sweet As Pup also have a ‘birthday squad’. Sign up to the mailing list and put in your dogs birthday and you get a discount code the month of your pups birthday so you can get your dog a good birthday present!

Barkley Dog Accessories

Barkley Dog Accessories is a small dog apparel brand and she (Olivia who runs Barkley) just comes out with really cute designs. They’re kiwi made to which is just… extra love that!

I have a few Barkley bandanas and a couple collars as well! The designs are just stellar and the quality is *chefs kiss*. Barkley is a small business, run by Olivia herself and her releases are also amazing. If you need a new collar, harness or lead, or you just want something extra for your dog – check out Barkley!

Pup and Running

I might be bias with this one because the writer of this blog is the owner of Pup and Running but I got into making dog apparel and accessories because I couldn’t find what I wanted for my dog. So, I started making what I wanted! Firstly, as a corgi owner, a long dog with short legs, I started with coats to fit dogs of a different shape. Pup and Running coats come in standard sizes… but also an XS long, S long and M long for dogs with a smaller body but need that length to cover them. Then I fell in love with bandanas and started making bandanas out of patterns I wanted. I realise them I could do collars and leads and bows… So here we are!

Pup and Running has a large variety of many dog accessories and apparel and in some really cool patterns! The standard collection that is always around is variety of different ginghams and polka dots and then there are so many fun prints in bandanas and bows! If you want something fun and bright for you pup – Pup and Running is where it’s at!

Pickles Pawtraits

Pickles Pawtraits is more of a human gift but I have so many that portraits now auto corrects to pawtraits in my phone!

My first dog, Logan, only lived to 2 and a half and all the pawtraits and paw prints in the world won’t bring him back. But it does help and make me happier around the home to have him on mugs and artwork, forever immortalised and with us. Petal… I have sooooo many more of Petal! They are just so cute! Friends who have pets? I almost always get them a pickles Pawtrait as a gift!

Cool, they do cute portraits… And put them on t-shirts and jumpers and mugs and prints! I have ALL OF IT. I just love my dogs and I love the pawtraits and I will never have enough. They are soooo worth checking out!

Little Rover Paper Co.

Little Rover isn’t necessarily a dog brand, I had Jodeanne (the owner/operator/creator) make cute tie the knot cards for my wedding for the tables. But she does also do plenty of dog stuff! When I sell things at Pup and Running, all my packages get stamped by either Petal or Logans paw print. Once you get a paw print from you pup you can order a stamp of it! She will put the paw prints on t shirts, jumpers, make stickers! Once you have that paw print – the world is your oyster with Little Rover Paper Co!

As I said, Little Rover isn’t explicitly a dog brand, she also has some super cool cards, art prints and stickers. She has a bespoke section on her website because she also does calligraphy and other paper art. Jodeanne is just an incredible creative!

She does do custom pet products where she does a line drawing of your pet and then you can get it on clothing or art work or as a sticker. She truly is amazing. I have had my stamps for a couple of years now and they are still going strong! Everything Jodeanne does is such a high quality! I strongly recommend checking out Little Rover Paper Co.

The Barking TagSmith

Custom Pet tags? Yes please! Every dog needs a tag on its collar for there registration. Then we usually add a tag with there name and contact number for safety, right? Why not get whatever you want?! The choices available with Barking TagSmith are AMAZING. I got my first tag for Logan just as something from there main page with a bear in the forest on it (we would call Logan, Logie Bear) and it was such good quality! I still have the tag. From there, the obsession only grew!

I have tags made for Petal where her name is on the Petal of a flower! The most incredible, I got a custom tag OF HER FACE! We all need tags for our dog. If you want something a little extra, a little amazing, incredible quality: The Barking TagSmith is where it’s at.

Pablo and Co

Pablo and Co is a special mention. They are not a kiwi brand, they are based in Australia and I have been following them for years. My first ever dog bandana was from Pablo and Co and it was a Ryan Gosling ‘hey girl’ pattern for Logan. Pablo and Co have the quirkiest designs and more recently have partnered with various Disney brands, Nickelodeon, Dr. Seus. They just do the coolest designs! I have so much from them and they are a huge inspiration for what I do.

Pablo and Co. no longer have the Ryan Gosling and Kanye West designs that made me fall in love with them but they have so much 90s nostalgia patterns that I keep falling in love with them more. They are quirky, fun, and… it all started with a daschund dog. A long dog – just like mine. Pablo and Co are stocked by a few shops in New Zealand which I have mentioned as my favourite shop. If you don’t want to pay the sipping from Australia then there are shops that stock them here! Everything Pablo and Co does is such high quality and so much fun it is so worth the postage! I usually buy quite a few things at a time and it totally makes the postage worth it! If you want something different and a bit more fun for your dog, Pablo and Co is the one brand that really is just full on fun.
