Dog Friendly walks in… Christchurch!

I, Tash, am famously living in Auckland! That doesn’t mean I don’t care about the rest of New Zealand! So I got Jules of Sweet As Pup to write about the wonderful Christchurch for and some gorgeous walks to do there! So whether you live there are need some inspiration about where to walk this weekend, or you are visiting, check out what Jules has to say.

Christchurch is a great city to be a dog owner with many walks across the suburbs. Whether you prefer the forest, hillside, park, or beach, there’s something for everyone. Here are some of our favourite dog-friendly walks in Christchurch.

1. Bottle Lake Forest

Bottle Lake Forest is a great spot for dog owners with a variety of tracks that wind through a large pine forest. This area has many trails of varying lengths and difficulties, making it suitable for all fitness levels. However, because the forest is also popular with cyclists and horse riders, we recommend using a long line to keep your dog and others safe if you do not have effective voice control of your dog.

2. Harry Ell Track

For those who enjoy a more difficult walk, the Harry Ell Track on the Port Hills offers stunning views. Dogs must be kept on a lead, but the reward at the top is the Sign of the Kiwi café which has excellent scones. If your dog needs a bit more exercise, Victoria Park is nearby which has an an off-leash dog park where they can run and play.

3. Halswell Quarry

Halswell Quarry is another great place for on-leash walks with a range of tracks that take you through different landscapes, including open fields and native bush. At the bottom of the quarry, there’s an unfenced dog park. While it’s a large open spot for letting your dog off the lead, it’s important that they are under effective control as the area is not enclosed. This park provides a good mix of structured walking and free playtime.

4. Sumner Beach

Sumner Beach is perfect for those who love the beach. You can walk your dog on a leash along the concrete walkway, and if you get hungry or thirsty stop at The Beach Sumner which is a dog friendly bar and restaurant. Dogs are welcome on the beach itself, but it’s important to be aware of restrictions during the summer months. Be sure to check the guidelines before you go.

Christchurch offers so many dog-friendly walks across the various landscapes. Remember to respect the rules, keep your dog under control, and enjoy exploring Canterbury.
